Papua New Guinea is the largest island country with the largest area, the largest population, the largest economic aggregate and the most development potential among the 14 island countries in the Pacific region. It is also an important economic and trade cooperation partner of China in the Pacific region. With the support of the China Ocean Development Foundation, the First Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources, has undertaken the marine space planning project of Papua New Guinea, aiming to promote the promotion and application of China's marine space planning technology concepts and methods in island countries by signing the memorandum of understanding on China PNG marine space planning cooperation and preparing PNG marine space planning implementation plan, We will strengthen practical cooperation between China and Papua New Guinea in the maritime field.
In January 2019, the delegation of the First Institute of Oceanography of the Ministry of Natural Resources visited the University of Papua New Guinea, the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources of Papua New Guinea, and the Ministry of Environment of Papua New Guinea, and initially reached an intention to carry out cooperative research on China Pakistan marine spatial planning. In June 2019, a delegation from the University of Papua New Guinea paid a return visit to the First Institute of Oceanology to discuss the contents of the memorandum of understanding on China Papua New Guinea maritime space planning cooperation and form a first draft. Now Pakistan is applying according to the procedure.
